Lanterns

Just thought I'd take a while to recount a short but rather queer dream I had about three days ago. In the dream, I was traipsing around in some old school campus that had about four floors per building and lots of corridors with rusty metal railings that were cold to the touch. At the center of the campus was a parade square with a massive stage built from wooden planks and metal poles. Someone was singing a rock song, and the whole school was crammed into the corridors that lined the buildings flanking the square, singing along, clapping, cheering and yelling at the height of excitement. However, all the sound was strangely muted to my ears. There was an omnipresent echo and an inexplicably distant quality that made everything sound like white noise dribbling in from some other faraway world, and I was just standing in the crowd, leaning against the railings...there but not quite there, listening but not quite comprehending.

And all of a sudden a wave of tranquility washed over me, and as I looked up, I saw several round white lanterns floating upwards into the sky, one after the other, each glowing with an otherworldly light that was reminiscent of neither flame nor electricity, but of a timeless illumination that reminded me of more ethereal states of being. There was no texture to determine and no surface quality to recognize; you could not see the paper that forms the skin of the lantern, nor could you see, despite the translucent quality of the lanterns, the source that emits the light from within. It was just the light itself, a bright, pulsating white light that filled its vessels and overrode all definition of shape and form.

The strangest thing was perhaps how the rest of the world continued with their affairs as if the lanterns had never appeared at all. The dood on the stage continued singing, the school continued listening, and nobody gazed upon those mysterious lights the way I did; I gazed, long and hard, watching as they drifted further up, up and up, one after the other, numerous but sparse and loosely scattered across a vast expanse of pale blue sky. In that moment, I experienced a strong longing for something...and while I can't remember what that something really was, I was well aware of the emotion of nostalgia and a strong, unquenched thirst for freedom.

  Yeah. That's about it I guess...yeah.
